Piece of cake

For those inquiring minds who want to know what I did today, here's a picture. Now you may be thinking, "but Kelsey, making a cake doesn't take all day." Well this cake did. I spent a little too much time watching Martha Stewart over the break, and I saw her make this cake. It looked so good, I had to try it. And I must say, I did finally find the chocolate cake recipe I've been looking for. The cake is really moist and somewhat heavy. I like heavy cake as opposed to light fluffy cake. But I was a little let down with the frosting, which sucks because that was what I was most excited about. First of all, I had to sit in front of the stove and constantly stir the frosting mixture for 45 minutes. Then I had to cool it in the fridge for 3 hours, stirring every 15 minutes. It ended up tasting like melted semi-sweet chocolate chips, which makes sense, because that's exactly what it is. And semi-sweet chocolate just isn't sweet enough for me. However, Miguel doesn't have quite the sweet tooth that I do, and he really likes it, so it wasn't a complete waste. But the point is, I started the cake at around 2:00 or so, and I finished it at 8:30. And now I have a sink full of dirty dishes. But it was a good learning experience. Now I know the difference between dutch process cocoa and regular cocoa.

In other not-so-tasty news, Miguel discovered a busted sewer line in our yard today. He called the city to come check it out. They came out twice and determined that the problem was with our lines, not the city's, so it's up to us to figure it out. Miguel called his dad to see if he had any recommendations for a plumber, and his dad said he'd come fix it himself. We'll see how that works. I figure the line's already broke, so it can't hurt for him to try. It could save us a lot of money. So, until it gets fixed, we have raw sewage slowly filling a hole on the side of our house. Sweet.

Sorry to leave you with such a gross story, but I've got to get to bed.

Raw sewage and chocolate cakes.... there is some sort of parallel there and I'm NOT referring to brown bathroom humor.
The cake looks lovely and like more work than I would want to invest!
Good luck with the sewage. Sounds scary!

I'm with celiac sis - sewage and cake - from the sublime to ridiculous. I concur with the idea of letting Senor Valdez giving the repair a go. worth a try anyway.
The cake does look tasty! Chuck practically swooned when I told him about it and that was BEFORE he had surgery!

That cat looks so good! Sorry about the sewage situation and hopefully Miguel's dad can fix it.
