public service announcement

Real quick- if you have a kiddo somewhere around Chloe's age (20 months), don't give him/her a whole hot dog. I suppose many good parents already knew that, but I consider myself a pretty good parent. I try to read up as much as I can on the age group my children are currently in and so forth. Yet tonight, I let Chloe have a hot dog for dinner. The next thing I knew, I was doing a mini Heimlich maneuver to dislodge an un-chewed piece of hot dog from Chloe's throat. Everyone's fine, it was just a little worrisome and I thought I should share my experience just in case anyone else was considering giving their toddler a hot dog. This experience has also reminded me that I really need to remain in the same room with Chloe while she eats. I admit I don't always do that, and I thank god that I was in the kitchen with her when it happened. So, no more multi-tasking while Chloe eats her meals. I hope that helps someone someday.

I guess if you want to let your kiddo have a hot dog during a cook-out, the proper thing to do would be to cut it up like you would with grapes. I cut the hot dog in small pieces after the incident, and Chloe was happy to stab at them with her fork.

Wow! Scary huh? I'm glad you were there too. Little kids have no concept of what will fit in their mouths and once you're choking you can't exactly call out for help. Valuable lesson learned eh?

man, that is the worst feeling when your little one is choking. i was reading in this super old school book on how to take care of that situation and they say to grab the baby by the feet, turn them upside down, and smack them on the back. i guess it works but luckily i've never had to try it.

What a scary feeling. We had something similar with Tucker when he was little. Ice cubes are also not a great idea for toddlers. I won't elaborate more than that. Glad it all was okay. As someone who frequently chokes on things herself, I know firsthand how scary it can be!

Oh man!! This is scary. I am so glad you were there and knew what to do. How do you do a mini hemlich or however it is spelled? When I have kids I have a lot to learn. Thanks for telling everyone!!
